Why China-to-India Shipments Get Held at Customs

Customs delays on China-to-India shipments usually come from a mismatch: the goods, the documents, or the importer are not the same story. They are not removed by promising “smooth clearance,” and they are not rare only for sea freight. Air and courier shipments get held for the same kinds of gaps.

This is a cause list. It is not a guarantee that a complete file will clear on a given day.

Incomplete or vague product information

Invoices that say “accessories,” “parts,” or “samples” without a product name are a common stop. The description should match the cartons: what the product is, how many pieces, and which carton holds which goods. A model number matters for electronics. Material matters for garments, footwear, and bags.

Documents that do not match

• Invoice quantity or value different from the packing list.
• Gross weight different from the cartons that arrived.
• Importer name different from the IEC, when an IEC is required.
• A payment trail that does not belong to the importer named on the file.

When a commercial import needs an Import Export Code, use the importer’s own IEC. Shipping the goods in someone else’s name to avoid that step is not a method this article recommends.

Regulatory and product rules

Some products need a standard, a licence, or an airline approval before they move. Electronics are the frequent example: BIS can apply to specific products, and a battery or a wireless function can matter even when BIS does not. Identify the product before treating the shipment as ordinary general cargo.

Value, quantity, and consignee readiness

A value that is obviously inconsistent with the goods invites questions. So does a consignee who cannot be reached, or a delivery address that does not match the importer. If the person in India is not ready to provide the documents asked for, the freight cannot finish the job by itself.

What to send before pickup

Supplier city, product name, cartons, weight, dimensions, destination, and a draft invoice that you are willing to stand behind. Add battery and wireless notes when they apply. For the move itself, door-to-door shipping, air cargo, or a quote request is the commercial next step. This article only explains why files get stuck.
